The presence of mercury in the aquatic system in Brazil is getting worse and worse, mainly beca use of the careless handling of this metal in gol d mines. This article pre_sents the history of this metal, its presence, form and behaviour in aquatic systems, and its magnification through the bioaccumulation phenomena. Considering that the pollution generated by the improper hand.Jing of this metal has been seriously affecting the health of both gol d miners and fish consumers,, it is high time that the government authorities make a policy suitable to the seriousness of this issue.
