Abstract

The impact of industrial effluents discharged into the Piracicaba ri ver basin was estimated through acute toxicity tests. Liquid industrial effluents from eight industries in the Piracicaba river basin were assayed using the microcrustacean Daphnia simi/is. Seven of them were acutely toxic toDaphnia. Impact estimates showed that textile and petrochemical industries should reduce the toxicity of their final effluents to prevent acute and chronic effects to the biota of the receiving waters.
