Abstract

Contamination by heavy metals and pesticides in water, sediment and aquatic organisms of the Ribeira ri ver and the Iguape-Cananéia estuarine-lagoon system was evaluated. Lead was found in water, 550 times the recommended limit for aquatic life, and also in the Sediment, 64 times the recommended limit. This metal was found in sediment exceeding the limit in all sarp.pling points along the river. Taking into account the importance of the ecosystem, it is recommended to obtain more data concerning contamination leveis and aquatic communities.
