Abstract

This paper shows the sanitary and economic importance of Sanitation to the control of intestinal diseases, pointing Low Cost Technologies as a means for Brasil to meet the goals of Water Supply and Sanitation Intemational Decade. After describing available technologies, the best choice criteria are referred with special emphasis on Progressive Sanitation. Among its final recomendations it includes increasing Low Cost Technology research and publishing of results, financial support from government to implementation programs, and development of the work by multiprofessional team with the indispensable participation of the community.
