Abstract

With the objective of destruction of organic toxic or recalcitrant compounds by microbial anaerobic community, the Destox concept has been initiated. This paper reports the application of the concept to a toxic mixture of about 30 polychlorinated aliphatic compounds and presents the results of partia! dechlorination by a microbial consortium constructed from a methanogenic community in a fixed-film stationary-bed reactor. After a progressive acclimation of the fermentative, the acetogenic and the hydrogenotrophic populations, one observes a progressive dechlorination of the toxic mixture. Mineral chloride concentration differences between influent and effluent demonstrated a 45% dechlorination of the toxic mixture by the acclimated microbial consortium.
