Abstract

Total particulate matter and metal concentrations in atmospheric aerosols were determined in four different sites of the state of Rio Grinde do Sul, Brazil. The sampling places were, the bus station in downtown Porto Alegre, a non-urban area (Ponta Grossa), the III petrochemical complex and a neighbournhood of the city of Caxias do Sul. Twelve elements were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The results showed that thé-points in Porto Alegre and Caxias do Sul ·were not within the Brazilian regulatión law regarding total particulate matter. Also, high leveis in the concentration of some-metal elements were detected in these points. Results obtained were compared with similar reported in other studies in different cities and also with others measured in other periods.
